Nature's Watch: Ongoing Efforts in Environmental Inspection and Conservation in Palestine

Nature's Watch: Ongoing Efforts in Environmental Inspection and Conservation in Palestine
16 July 2024

Since the establishment of the Environmental Police in 2018, the importance of monitoring and inspection in the nature reserves has been widely discussed. These discussions highlighted the need to develop and enhance the technical capabilities and skills of environmental inspectors, Environmental Police officers, and Customs Police officers, particularly in combating illegal hunting and trade and dealing with various types of wildlife.

Introductory and Training Workshops

As part of these efforts, funded by Hanns Seidel Foundation, Palestine Society for Environment and Sustainable Development, in partnership with the Environmental Quality Authority and relevant security authorities, conducted a series of introductory and training workshops. These workshops cover critical topics such as:
- Identifying wildlife and endangered bird species, understanding their behavior and ecological roles.
- Handling snakes, given their importance in maintaining ecological balance in Palestine, and procedures for relocating them.
- Methods of confiscation in homes, shops, and warehouses upon receiving reports or complaints from citizens.
- First aid training for birds and animals and general safety procedures.

Exchange of Expertise and Knowledge Acquisition

During these workshops, environmental inspectors were able to exchange field experiences in reserves, markets, and border crossings, gaining valuable environmental knowledge to address environmental issues, particularly those related to violations. The project also aims to exchange expertise with neighboring countries.

Development of Tools and Technical Knowledge

The project provided specific tools for environmental inspectors and envrionment police to ensure safe and proper handling of wildlife during various confiscation operations. These tools were practically used in nature reserves and other sites, contributing to the strengthening of environmental law enforcement.

Issuance of the Wildlife Guide in Palestine

Among the achievements of this project was the publication of the "Wildlife Guide in Palestine." This scientific guide, accredited by the Environmental Quality Authority, is an essential tool that helps environmental inspectors classify, identify, and manage wildlife effectively and responsibly, ensuring the safety of both individuals and the animals.

Continuity of the Project

Through these ongoing efforts, which continue to this day, the Environmental Inspection Project aims to protect nature in Palestine and enhance environmental awareness, contributing to building a sustainable future for upcoming generations.
