Mahmiyat.ps Urges Community to Unplug Phone Chargers for Earth Hour
25 March 2023

The Mahmiyat.ps website has issued a call to local community members, urging them to actively participate in the Earth Hour event. As part of this initiative, individuals are encouraged to unplug mobile phone chargers from electrical sockets and turn off unnecessary lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on the twenty-fifth of March.

Mahmiyat.ps highlighted a common practice found in homes, institutions, banks, universities, and schools, where device cables are often left plugged into electrical outlets. In response to this, Palestine Reserves is urging the Palestinian community to adopt the practice of turning off and disconnecting these devices from electricity, including mobile phone chargers. According to data from electricity companies in Palestine, approximately 5% of total electricity consumption is attributed to charging mobile phones, while the remaining power is wasted when devices are left connected without actually charging. This is evident by the noticeable temperature increase in chargers when they remain plugged in without a phone being charged.

The organization emphasized that reducing electricity consumption is crucial for addressing environmental issues. High electricity consumption necessitates increased fuel usage, which in turn has devastating consequences for the environment. Palestine Reserves emphasized that these simple practices they advocate for are part of a larger movement for positive change in preserving the environment. They present an opportunity to create a sustainable future and promote environmentally friendly practices such as daily electricity and water consumption reduction, pollution mitigation, recycling, and overall consumption rationalization.

Mahmiyat.ps highlighted that Palestine actively participates in this annual global event proposed by the World-Wide Fund for Nature. Earth Hour serves as a platform to address climate change threats to the planet by encouraging worldwide action, even within the confines of living rooms.

It is worth noting that Earth Hour is observed on the last Saturday of March each year. Palestine celebrates this event annually, showcasing various forms of participation both on the ground and through social media platforms. These activities aim to enhance environmental awareness regarding the importance of electricity consumption rationalization.

By taking part in Earth Hour and adopting responsible energy practices, the Palestinian community can contribute to the global effort to combat climate change and promote a sustainable future.
